LUKE BAILEY

Turning is a way for me to uncover the rich natural designs found in wood. I like to use wood which is spalted, that is, streaked by fungal growth which occurs as the wood decays. These abstract, etching-like linear patterns reveal the beauty of impermanence.

Intrigued by natural irregularities, I choose to turn pieces which include the contours of the wood itself. When possible, I include voids created by disease and decay as well as tracks and holes left by insects.

This allows me to create unique hand turned wood bowls which are designed and crafted to reveal these designs.

My pieces are currently available at the Konsthantverkarna Karlstad gallery. They have also been exhibited in galleries and shows both here and in Hawai'i, where I lived before moving to Sweden.

HOW I FINISH MY BOWLS

The beauty of wood and its varied, rich grain patterns is often revealed through the type of finish one uses. Over the years I've experimented with a variety of finishes. Today, depending on the wood, I use either mineral oil or a food-safe lacquer.
